Abstract
The West African region faces the challenge of sustainably increasing agricultural productivity to ensure food and nutritional security for its 400 million citizens. The ECOWAS fertilizer policy emphasizes the need for a timely supply of quality fertilizers specific to the region's agroecological zones. The Feed the Future Enhancing Growth through Regional Agricultural Input Systems (EnGRAIS) project has addressed this challenge since 2018 by investing in three complementary directions. This second edition of the West Africa Fertilizer Business Information Guide provides updated national statistics on fertilizer production, trade, and use, as well as maps and profiles of fertilizer production and blending facilities. The guide promotes the judicious use of quality fertilizers through accredited laboratories and disseminating agricultural input packages adapted to different agroecological zones. The International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) works with AfricaFertilizer.org and the West Africa Fertilizer Association (WAFA) to improve the quality and availability of fertilizer data for decision-makers in sub-Saharan Africa, and the Fertilizer Technical Working Group validates fertilizer statistics for each country annually. This guide is crucial in facilitating informed decisions by stakeholders in the fertilizer sector to support agricultural and food production in the region, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and the significant increase in fertilizer prices.
