AbstractThe fertilizer industry in Zambia is characterized by a significant importation of various fertilizer compounds, primarily NPK and Urea, which are essential for agricultural productivity. Major companies, such as Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia, Fertilizer Seed & Grain Zambia, Zambian Fertilizers Ltd, and United Capital Fertilizers, operate blending plants to customize these fertilizers for local farmers. In 2022, Zambia's total fertilizer imports reached 632,529 MT, marking a 4% increase from the previous year. Despite this rise, challenges persist, including the timing of imports, which predominantly occur during the planting season, potentially affecting agricultural output. The government’s Fertilizer Input Support Program (FISP) continues to play a crucial role in determining market demand, with implications for fertilizer availability and pricing. As the planting season approaches, the focus on blending and local production is expected to grow, supported by recent investments in granulation facilities.
