Abstract
Togo boasts substantial reserves of rock phosphate, extracted for over five decades. Société Nouvelle des Phosphates du Togo (SNPT) serves as the country's primary phosphate producer, operating a mining site in Hahotoé and a processing facility in Kpémé, with an annual capacity of 4,800,000 metric tons. In 2023, SNPT produced 1,517,478 metric tons of rock phosphate. Despite these significant production volumes, Togolese farmers do not utilize these phosphates extensively due to their lack of transformation into soluble fertilizers suitable for agriculture. Currently, NutriSource is the sole operational blended fertilizer producer in Togo, with a capacity of 150 metric tons per hour since its establishment in 2023. Previously, Compagnie Togolaise d'Intrants Agricoles (CIAT) had a production capacity of 120 metric tons per hour but has remained inactive since 2021. This fertilizer overview gives an overview of Togo's fertilizer production landscape, highlighting existing capacities, operational challenges, and the potential for enhancing agricultural productivity through effective fertilizer utilization and production strategies.
