Central to this objective is the effective use of fertilizers; however, consumption levels in ECOWAS countries remain alarmingly low. In response, the USAID-funded Feed The Future EnGRAIS project, in collaboration with AfricaFertilizer.org and the West African Fertilizer Association (WAFA), is conducting essential studies to assess fertilizer volumes, logistics, and cost structures in the region. This paper discusses a workshop held in August 2021 in Cotonou, Benin, aimed at validating data on fertilizer consumption and logistics in Togo, Benin, and Niger. The workshop brought together approximately 30 stakeholders from public and private sectors, focusing on collaborative efforts to improve fertilizer supply and consumption. Through comprehensive presentations and group discussions, participants updated key statistics, identified constraints, and developed recommendations to optimize fertilizer usage. Notable findings indicate a significant increase in apparent fertilizer consumption in these countries, driven by government agricultural policies and recent reforms. The workshop not only provided valuable insights into the regional fertilizer landscape but also laid the groundwork for future advocacy and decision-making aimed at bolstering food security through enhanced agricultural input utilization.
