| Abstract | The overview of fertilizer statistics in Benin from 2018 to 2022 highlights significant trends, particularly in 2022, based on official trade data validated by the Fertilizer Technical Working Group of Benin (FTWGBEN). In this period, Benin has not engaged in primary production of mineral fertilizers but has seen a steady growth in organic fertilizer production, notably from the company BIOPHYTO, which produced 22,000 MT in 2022—an increase of 47% from 15,000 MT in 2021. This growth was primarily driven by heightened domestic demand due to rising global mineral fertilizer prices, although exports remained minimal, with only 175 MT of MOP sent to Togo. The fertilizer market in Benin is largely dependent on imports, with NPK fertilizers accounting for 80% of total imports in 2022. Among these, NPK 14-18-18+6S+1B, predominantly used for cotton cultivation, comprised 90% of the NPK imports. Fertilizer imports peaked in the first two quarters of 2022, totaling 211,988 MT for the year, reflecting the urgency to meet agricultural needs during the critical planting season. The sources of these imports shifted significantly in 2022, with most urea sourced from Nigeria and all NPK from Morocco, contrasting with the more diversified supply in previous years. Apparent fertilizer consumption for 2022 reached 285,842 MT, marking a 12% increase from 2021, a rise attributed to increased imports and government subsidies aimed at ensuring fertilizer affordability and availability. The data underscores the evolving landscape of fertilizer use in Benin, characterized by a growing emphasis on organic production and a continued reliance on imports amid global market challenges. | |
