Abstract
This overview presents an analysis of fertilizer statistics in Malawi from 2019 to 2023, with a focus on the significant developments in 2023. Drawing on official trade data validated by the Fertilizer Technical Working Group (FTWG-MWI), the report highlights key aspects of fertilizer production, imports, exports, and consumption. Malawi lacks primary production of inorganic fertilizers, relying entirely on imports, primarily NPK, Urea, and Ammonium Sulphate. The implementation of the Affordable Inputs Program in 2020 dramatically increased fertilizer imports and consumption, culminating in a 57% rise in imports from 2022 to 2023, reflecting a recovery from previous market disruptions. Notably, 90% of fertilizers were sourced from ten countries, predominantly via Mozambique's ports. The apparent consumption of fertilizers showed significant fluctuations, with a remarkable recovery in 2023, reaching over 413,000 MT.
