Abstract
This overview provides a comprehensive fertilizer statistics in Ethiopia from 2010 to 2023, validated for the 2024 edition by the Fertilizer Technical Working Group (FTWG) Ethiopia. Utilizing official trade data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources (MoANR), Ethiopian Agricultural Businesses Corporation (EABC), and the Ethiopian Customs Commission (ECC), the study examines key metrics such as production, import, monthly usage, origins, and consumption patterns. Notably, Ethiopia currently has no primary production of inorganic fertilizers, relying predominantly on imports—over 90% facilitated by EABC. The analysis reveals a significant transition in fertilizer types, with a shift from Urea and DAP to NP compounds initiated in 2013. Additionally, the document highlights the emergence of blending plants and ongoing challenges related to soil acidity affecting agricultural productivity. The findings aim to inform policymakers and stakeholders in the agriculture sector, providing critical insights for effective fertilizer utilization and management.
