Abstract | This report provides an overview of the Site Selection Committee's activities for the proposed African Fertilizer Center. The committee, consisting of representatives from various African countries and the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC), convened at IFDC from January 18-22 to begin narrowing down potential locations for the center. Prominent countries on the list include Cameroon, Kenya, Senegal, and Zimbabwe. The committee utilized selection criteria established by the Inter-African Committee on Fertilizers to assess the suitability of host countries. Two subcommittees will conduct visits to determine the desire and capability of the shortlisted countries to host the center. The final recommendations from the Site Selection Committee will be presented to the Organization of African Unity (OAU) by May 15. The African Fertilizer Center aims to contribute to Africa's self-sufficiency in food production through the judicious use of appropriate fertilizers. Driven by the goal of achieving agricultural self-sufficiency, the committee recognizes the importance of a comprehensive understanding of soils, soil management, and fertilizer application techniques. Additionally, addressing the scarcity of trained personnel is a critical challenge to developing emerging African nations. The IFDC, as the foster parent of the center, is committed to ensuring its successful establishment and operation. This involves training technicians in fertilizer production, marketing, and use. Collaboration between the African Fertilizer Center, IFDC, and other relevant organizations is emphasized to leverage recent research and application techniques advances. | |
