Abstract
The Fertilizer Statistics Validation Workshop 2020, organized by the Fertilizer Technical Working Group (FTWG) of Mali, took place on March 25, 2021, in Bamako, Mali. Co-hosted by AfricaFertilizer.org (AFO) and the West African Fertilizer Association (WAFA), and supported by the EnGRAIS project, this semi-virtual meeting brought together 17 in-person and approximately 10 online participants, including key stakeholders from government, customs, statistics, and the private sector. The workshop focused on validating 2020 fertilizer statistics, including production, imports, exports, and apparent consumption. Through plenary sessions and group discussions, participants analyzed comprehensive data compiled prior to the meeting, which highlighted significant trends such as a 23% decrease in fertilizer imports and a 22% decline in apparent consumption compared to 2019. Challenges affecting fertilizer usage, including market disruptions and insecurity, were addressed. The workshop underscored the importance of updating methodologies for more accurate data collection and analysis.
