Abstract
This report examines Albania's agricultural landscape, focusing on fertilizer use and the evolving agricultural marketing systems. Despite a significant increase in fertilizer costs since 1992, the country has experienced a rise in wheat production and has witnessed the emergence of over 300 private dealers providing fertilizer services. Additionally, the report highlights the efforts of the Directorate of Statistics of the Albanian Ministry of Agriculture and Food in implementing reliable survey systems to meet the growing need for accurate and timely agricultural information. The report underscores the importance of such information for decision-makers as Albania transitions to a free-market economy. The findings of the IFDC survey conducted in collaboration with the Albanian government provide valuable insights into farm production, constraints, and resource utilization. The report also emphasizes the need for ongoing support to farmers, private farmers' organizations, and research and extension workers to enhance agricultural productivity and promote the free-market agricultural sector.
