Abstract | This manual focuses on the eight major pests that affect crops in Nigeria, with a focus on their impact and the times of year they occur. The pests discussed include caterpillars, grasshoppers, locusts, rodents, birds, snails, weeds, and nematodes. Each pest causes varying types of damage to crops such as feeding on plant parts, roots, tubers, grains, and fruits. This session highlights the importance of understanding the nature of these pests for effective pest management and informs agricultural input dealers about which pesticides are needed to control them. The activity involves group work, discussions, and problem-solving exercises to help participants learn about these pests, their damage, and their seasonal occurrences. The goal is to equip participants with knowledge that will help in pest management practices, ultimately aiding farmers in protecting their crops and increasing agricultural productivity. | |
