| Abstract | This report evaluates the fertilizer sector in Burma (now Myanmar) and provides recommendations for improving its effectiveness. The report highlights Burma's comparative advantage in rice production and its efforts to increase fertilizer use and introduce improved crop varieties. However, it also points out that Burma ranks low in fertilizer intensity compared to other Asian countries. The report suggests that Burma needs to make difficult choices regarding the allocation of limited fertilizer supplies, especially considering the foreign exchange crisis and the slowing growth of rice production. Recommendations include shifting from exporting surplus urea fertilizer to using it domestically to increase rice and oilseed production, increasing fertilizer prices to reflect actual costs, and integrating the recommendations into a national fertilizer program involving key ministries. | |
