Abstract | High quality seed is the basis for the sustainable increase of agricultural production. Seed quality determines crop yield potential and thus the potential return of investment on land, labour and capital. Assuring access to quality seed is essential in efforts to reduce food insecurity and increase farm-derived income. The challenge facing agricultural development efforts is how to sustainably improve access to quality seed, as part of improving agricultural sector functioning as a whole. CATALIST 2 has sought to improve smallholder farmers’ livelihoods and promote regional trade in Burundi, North and South Kivu in DRC, and Rwanda. Improving availability and use of quality seed was thus an integral component of the CATALIST 2 project. In this publication, experiences gained in CATALIST 2 are analysed to support the design and implementation of future seed sector interventions. Recommendations in this publication will benefit funders, designers and implementers of seed sector interventions in emerging economies. | |
