AbstractThe African continent faces immense challenges in the 21st century, with a rapidly increasing population and high rates of malnutrition, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This paper investigates the root causes of low agricultural productivity in SSA and highlights the potential of market-driven solutions to enhance food security. It particularly focuses on the role of potassium (K) as a crucial macronutrient. The paper examines the historical context of agricultural development in SSA and the region's limited fertilizer use compared to other parts of the world. It emphasizes the need for increased fertilizer adoption to boost yields, reduce soil degradation, and improve food production. Market-driven strategies, targeted fertilizer blends, and strong value chains are vital in promoting fertilizer use, ultimately contributing to increased agricultural productivity and food security in SSA.
