| Abstract | IFDC, in collaboration with USAID, has implemented the Bureau for Food Security Feed the Future project on Soil Fertility Technology Adoption, Policy Reform, and Knowledge Management (BFS-SFT) since March 2015. This project aims to bridge the gap between scientific research and the dissemination of technologies to smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. The BFS-SFT project consists of three workstreams: Workstream 1 focuses on developing and validating technologies, approaches, and practices for nutrient management and sustainable agricultural intensification; Workstream 2 supports policy reform processes, advocacy, and market development in the agricultural sector; and Workstream 3 involves the SOILS Consortium, which aims to enhance soil fertility through research and capacity building partnerships. During the fiscal year 2019, the BFS-SFT project activities focused on improving nitrogen use efficiency, evaluating activated phosphate rock, promoting balanced crop nutrition, implementing sustainable soil intensification practices, and documenting policy reforms and market development impact. The project conducted research in collaboration with universities, research institutions, and the private sector in sub-Saharan African and Asian countries. The project's results in FY2019 included developing several research products, technological innovations, and policy recommendations. These outcomes contributed to increased agricultural productivity, improved soil fertility and plant nutrition, enhanced climate resilience, and reduced nutrient losses and greenhouse gas emissions. The project also conducted capacity-building programs for professionals from the public and private sectors, farmers, and extension officials, focusing on women farmers and youth engagement. Additionally, the project formed successful public-private partnerships to implement research activities, develop fertilizer products, and influence fertilizer policy reforms. The BFS-SFT project aims to enhance agricultural productivity through improved soil and nutrient management, fertilizer market development, policy reform, and a better regulatory framework in Feed the Future countries. | |
